HISTORICAL SOCIETY
MISSION:
The Mission of the Saint Vincent Historical Society is
to preserve, interpret and foster a deeper understanding of the history,
heritage, and culture of that rural community known as Nova Gallia (New
France) located near Academy, Indiana generally located in Washington,
St. Joseph and Perry Townships, Allen County, Indiana and which has
its central focus of Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
PURPOSE of the SOCIETY:
1. To collect, preserve, conserve and document artifacts,
primary and secondary documents, and other materials which relate to
the history of Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and to make this
research available to its membership and the general public.
2. To initiate and promote scholarly research both within and outside
of its membership relating to the history of the Saint Vincent de Paul
community and to the genealogy of those families and individuals who
originated, developed and built the community.
3. To establish and maintain a permanent archival library of primary
and secondary research materials for the use and education of its members
and the general public.
4. To acquire, by purchase, gifts, devise, or otherwise the title to,
or the custody and control of, historic structures, sites, and places
of importance, value or interest to the history of the Saint Vincent
de Paul community.
5. To establish ties and co-operate with other historical and genealogical
societies and organizations which might benefit the fulfillment of the
Society’s mission, including preservation of structures, sites
or places (public and private) of importance, value or interest to the
history of the Saint Vincent de Paul community.
6. To establish a museum and to acquire by purchase, gift, devise or
otherwise, items of value, importance or interest to the history of
the nature, culture, social structure and religious life of the community
of Saint Vincent’s, including but not limited to: historical manuscripts,
letters, printed documents, newsprint, oral histories, household items,
tools and implements.
7. To mark places of historical interest to the Saint Vincent de Paul
area with suitable markers and monuments, and to participate in the
present cultural life of the surrounding community.
